Be Careful About What You Wish For in Syria
Adib Farha, a political analyst and former adviser to Lebanon's finance minister, argues in an October 26, 2005 article in The Globe and Mail of Toronto that: We should continue to use every peaceful means to steer the Syrian leadership toward changing its evil ways. The goal should be behavioral change, not regime change. A premature fall of the Assad regime could "open up the gates of hell" (to borrow a phrase the Syrian Prime Minister recently used to threaten the U.S.), and everyone would be in deep trouble.
"So, a word of caution to cheerleaders for immediate regime change," warned Mr. Farha, who now lives in the United States: "Be careful what you wish for, because you might get it."
