Will the European Union Unravel?
Pavel Molchanov, a Texas financial analyst, noted in the June 1, 2005 edition of The National Business Review of New Zealand that:Three times in the past three years, France has thrown a bombshell on the stage of international politics, with lasting consequences. First, in April 2002, when Jean-Marie Le Pen made it into the second round of the presidential election, there was briefly the prospect of a far-right demagogue running a nuclear-armed G-7 country. Then, in early 2003, President Jacques Chirac with a stubbornness befitting his role model Charles de Gaulle declared that France would veto any Security Council resolution authorizing the use of force against Iraq, causing damage to the Atlantic alliance that lasts to this day.
"And then," Mr. Molchanov added, "on May 29, 2005, the people of France went to the polls and gave a bloody nose to the entire European Union." I recommend Where next for the European Dis-Union?
